In 1890 the Trieste-based newspaper "L'indipendente" published a short story called "L'assassinio di via Belpoggio" (The Murder of via Belpoggio). It was the literary breakthrough of Italo Svevo, the italian novelist discovered and supported by James Joyce. It is a masterful short story filled by the imperfections and the unhappiness peculiar to the characters of Svevo's most famous novels. Its plot is a chain of psychological reactions generated by the stunning question with which the story finds its powerful beginning: "So, was murder such an easy thing?"
